It’s a damn addictive game, despite its difficulty (or maybe even because of it). Next time I won’t walk blindly into a fire trap. Next time I’ll get further, I won’t be as hasty, I’ll be quicker on my shield, more careful with my ammo, better at dodging bullets. I’ve never wanted to snap my Dualshock 4 in half as much as I did when, after setting up my character with an enviable suite of power ups, I was robbed of life by a surprise fire trap. It’s a fast-paced, panic inducing game that can and will rob you of your progress just as you believe you’re finally getting somewhere. Possibly one of the cruellest games of the year. ![]() While there are a fair few mutations, you’ll only be able to choose from four random ones, meaning it can be pot luck if you’ll be able to get the ones you’re actually looking for. These can give you increased movement speed, extra health, more melee range or can be a bonus specific to the character you’re playing. You’ll quickly pick a favourite, the one that best suits your style of play, and they’re all worth trying out at least once. You can choose to play as Fish, who can dodge roll and gets more ammo from pickups, or Crystal who starts with more health and can briefly shield herself. The characters themselves are awesome in their differences. On the way you’ll collect all manner of weapons and power-ups to assist you in reaching your goal. Upon death, repeat, chipping away at the game, until you reach the Nuclear Throne. Select a character from a roster of mutants with meaningful and wildly different abilities, and start shooting your way through hordes of mutants, being careful not to get shot or blow yourself up. The general premise and gameplay of Nuclear Throne is deviously simple. ![]() If you imagine a cast of characters as varied as your average episode of Futurama, then you’ve got the general idea. Rather than fighting for the final hope of Humanity, this post-apocalypse is simply a world filled with a variety of monsters, including the characters you can play as, which you must fight your way past if you’re going to make it to the Nuclear Throne. Nuclear Throne is a roguelike, twin-stick shooter set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
